
The Marche Region stretches from the Apennines to the sea and includes some hilly landscape. The sun blessed hills are ideal for wine growing. Vines have been planted here since ancient times and have taken on an important social culture status even though quantity used to be put before quality. From the 1960’s a change was made to more quality and it was possible to produce top Denominazioni di Origine Controllata wines, at present there are two DOCG wines and fifteen DOC wines.
- Vernaccia di Serrapetrona (DOCG): Vernaccia nera 85% and white grapes from the Province Macerata for this sparkling wine with 40% dried grapes.
- Conero (DOCG): 85% Montepulciano and 15% Sangiovese.
- Verdicchio dei castelli di Jesi (DOC): the most used grape variety; 85% Verdicchio and other white grapes.
- Verdicchio di Matelica (DOC): Verdicchio grapes and Trebbiano Toscano as well as Malvasia Toscana.
- Falerio dei Colli Ascolani (DOC): 20-50% Trebbiano toscano, 10-30% Passerina and Pecorino as well as other white grape varieties.
- Bianchello del Metauro (DOC): Biancamè, that is grown on the banks of the River Metauro, with 95%, and 5% Malvasia Toscana.
- Esino (DOC): along the River Esino from Ancona to Macerata. 50% Verdicchio and other white grape varieties; Sangiovese and Montepulciano.
- Colli Maceratesi (DOC): 70% Maceratine fort he white wine; 50% Sangiovese fort he red wine.
- Colli Pesaresi (DOC): 70% Sangiovese for the red wine; Trebbiano Toscano also called Albanella 75% for the white wine.
- Rosso Conero (DOC): Montepulciano and other red grape varieties.
- Rosso Piceno (DOC): 30-50% Sangiovese, 35-70% Montepulciano and others.
- Lacrima di Morro d’Alba (DOC): the autochthon vine Lacrima and Montepulciano as well as Verdicchio.
- Serrapetrona (DOC): the autochthon vine Vernaccia Nera and other red varieties.
- Offida (DOC): 85% Passerina. “Passito” and “Vino santo” from dried grapes. The red wine is made from 50% Montepulciano, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and other grapes.
- I Terreni di San Severino (DOC): 50%Vernaccia Nera or 60% Montepulciano.
- Pergola (DOC): 70% Aleatico and other grapes.
- San Ginesio (DOC): 50% Sangiovese and Vernaccia Nera, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot as well as Ciliegiolo; San Ginesio spumante from 85%Vernaccia Nera.
