Roberto Cipresso & Attilio Scienza

09.11.2009 Roberto Cipresso & Attilio Scienza :Which wines will be the wines of tomorrow?

The answer can surely be found in the past. This was the message that the well known wine maker Roberto Cipresso and true master of the Terroir, Professor Attilio Scienza gave at the „Degustationstreffen” which took place on the last afternoon of the Merano WineFestival which was also attended by the president of the festival Helmuth Köcher.

The meeting only lasted for an hour, but was packed with interesting information. Cipresso and Scienza, if you like the apprentice and the master, transported the many visitors in the Pavillon des Fleurs of the Kurhaus on an interactive journey into the past.
Roberto Cipresso, together with his group of “Terroirists” of the wine circus, vehement complained about a technical approach to the wine. This, in his opinion, would lead to a loss of the true identity of the wine which is marked by the history, the culture and the relationship to the ground and the people. During the meeting an exclusive Terroir wine was tasted, a Marsiliano, that was found during archaeological diggings at the ruins of Caesar’s villa in Bacoli, a wine from the hundred year old grape variety Falanghina, a true monument in wine growing, a Dorona wine, which appears on Mazzorbo an island next to Venice, as well as wines from grapes that are particularly hardy against disease.
Attilio Scienza presented extraordinary Caucasian wines that go back to over 5000 B.C. Since 1986 Scienza has been researching into this period and has discovered over 800 cultivated and wild grape varieties. Due to his research Scienza can rule out all connections between the Caucasian and the European vines contrary to modern belief.

The Pavillon des Fleurs was an interesting place to be for all wine lovers. There were over twenty Italian producers present including those from Campania (I Vini della Sibilla - Bacoli (NA)) Veneto (Bisol - Valdobbiadene (TV), Cà Orologio - Baone (PD), Diesel Farm - Marostica (VI), Massimago – Mezzane di Sotto (VR)) Tuscany (Basile - Cinigiano (GR), Camperchi - Civitella Val di Chiana (AR), Castello di Vicarello - Cinigiano (GR), Il Pinino – Montalcino (SI), Le Pietrose - Montepulciano (SI), Le Torri - Barberino Val d’Elsa (FI), Leuta – Cortona (AR), Logonovo - Montalcino (SI), Podere La Valletta - Lorenzana (PI), Podere Lentisco - Massa Marittima (GR), Poggio Mandorlo – Buonconvento (SI), Tenuta Oliveto - Buonconvento (SI)), Marche (Tenimenti Metauro - Montemaggiore M. (PU)), and Argentinean companies (Achaval Ferrer – Mendoza), that have been advised by Roberto Cipresso and his wine making team over the last few years and who presented a selection of very interesting wines at the festival.
